Flood situation turning grim in Barak Valley

Silchar, July 24: The flood situation in Barak Valley has become grim due to incessant rains over the last 24 hours. The rising water level of the river Barak has swept across the embankment at Raipur flooding many areas including Uttar Krrishnapur GP, Kumarpara, Vairobnagar, Rajnagar GP and other interior areas. A total of 15 villages have been submerged due to the collapse of Raipur embankment.
Despite funds allocated for construction and repair of embankments, there has not been much improvement in this regard. Speaking on the issue, A Hussain Laskar, the executive engineer of Water Resource Department, said that though Rs.1.9 crore was sanctioned under CRF fund in 2010-11 for repairing the embankment and also to prevent river erosion, but no work could be started because of political interference. Finally, an allotment of Rs.50,46,000 lakh was sanctioned in the present financial year under MGNREGA scheme but the work on the embankment is yet to begin.
At present there is a serious staff crunch at the Water Resource Department with only 2 SDOs, 1 assistant engineer, 4 junior engineers and 3 sub-engineers working under the executive engineer in the district. Moreover, some of the staff have been deputed for NRC duties. This has further created problem for the department to meet the emergent situation, pointed out A Hussain Laskar. The water-level of Sonabarighat embankment is also inching towards crossing the danger mark. Uttar Krishnapur, Tonderkandi, Chandpur, Hatikhal, Jhulanpur dholai and adjoining areas have been severely affected.
As the flood situation is turning grim, officers of all ranks in the Water Resource Department are expected to be alert and agile. Quite strangely, assistant SDO, Mazahur Islam, of Sonai division has remained absent from his duty who was on leave to celebrate Eid-ul-Fitr. Taking his absence as grave offence, S Vishwanathan, IAS, Deputy Commissioner Cachar served a show-cause notice on him, asking him to explain the ground of his absence. (Source:SentinelAssam)
