Silchar, January 19: Barak river known for its heaviest sloughing among all the river system has been causing erosions along its banks during high floods, taking in its grip villages after villages, damaging standing crops an properties. The losses during the deluge are enormous. The Lakhipur sub–division of Cachar is hard hit during the floods. Binnakandie Ghat and the cluster of villages of Singerband have been the worst hit in the last floods. Taking into account the erosions and the damages, the Government of Assam has sanctioned Rs.3 crore for taking up anti–erosion measures along Binnakandie Ghat. If not checked, the semi town of Fulertal, its human habitations and most importantly the National Highway 37, earlier 53, would be worst affected. The initiation of the work was inaugurated by Rajdeep Goala, MLA of the area, recently. At a simple function held in this connection on the site, Rajdeep Goala speaking as a chief–guest said in fact the state government had sanctioned Rs.2 crore which was raised to Rs.3 crore at my initiative. The entire amount for the protection of Binnakandie Ghat and the areas around it has been provided from the Chief Minister’s special package on development. The MLA disclosed adequate fund would also be release soon for the protective works along Singerband. He appealed to the people to have closer monitoring of the works on anti–erosion and to ensure that it were done properly, maintaining quality. He would also personally visit the work site and take stock of the progress of work. There should be no compromise with the quality of work.
